A day trip to Corvo from Flores: the boat, the timings and what fits in a day

From Flores, Corvo is about 40 minutes away by boat, and a day is enough to see the crater and the village. The choice is how to cross: the public boat, which is cheap and runs on a fixed timetable, or a tour boat from Santa Cruz das Flores that takes the long way round the Flores coast first. After that you decide what to do with the hours on the island. Either you go up to the crater and look, or you walk it, and on a short-season day you only have time for one walk.

The regular crossing is Atlânticoline's Pink Line between Santa Cruz das Flores and Vila do Corvo, and it runs all year. The boat is the Lancha Ariel, and the online booking system shows 12 passenger seats per sailing. With so few seats, sailings fill up: in late September 2026 the next few sailings were full or had one seat left. Book as soon as you know your Flores dates.

The timetable changes with the season. These are the 2026 departures from Atlânticoline's own booking system; check them again before you go, because the schedule is revised regularly.

• June to August 2026: every day except Wednesday. The boat leaves Santa Cruz at 09:30 and reaches Corvo at 10:10; the return leaves Corvo at 17:00 and is back on Flores at 17:40. That gives you almost seven hours on the island.
• May, September and the first half of October 2026: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Out at 10:00, back from Corvo at 16:00, which leaves a little over five hours.
• Mid-October to April: Tuesday and Saturday only, same times. That was the pattern both in spring 2026 and from the second half of October 2026.

A third-party fare list for 2026 gives €16.30 one way and €32.60 return for a non-resident adult, with reductions for children and over-65s. Treat that as a guide and confirm the price when you book on atlanticoline.pt.

The Pink Line is weather-dependent in every season. The Corvo municipality says plainly that sea conditions and the time of year decide whether the crossing goes. If the morning boat is cancelled, the day trip is off; if the afternoon return is cancelled, you are on Corvo for the night.

Several Flores operators sell a Corvo day on their own semi-rigid boats. WestCanyon's version is typical: it leaves one of the two small harbours in Santa Cruz, Poças or Boqueirão, at 9:00 or 9:30. It runs north along the northeast coast of Flores past waterfalls and into sea caves, then crosses to Corvo in about 40 minutes. The return leaves Corvo at 15:00 or 15:30, about five hours in all. It needs at least six passengers to run, but in summer it runs every day.

With a tour you get the Flores coast from the water and a fixed pickup, and the van up to the crater is often part of the package. You also get less time on Corvo than the summer Pink Line gives you. On a Wednesday, the one summer day without a public boat, a tour is the only boat across.

Corvo has one village, Vila do Corvo, on the flat southern tip next to the airstrip, and one road up to the crater. At the harbour you will find local drivers with minivans; WestCanyon describes nine-seat vans waiting at the port. The ride to the Caldeirão viewpoint takes about ten minutes. One couple paid €10 each for the return ride in 2022; agree the price before you get in.

You can ask the driver to come back for you later, which is what makes walking in the crater possible. Walking up from the village instead is about 6 km with roughly 550 metres of climb, around one hour 45 minutes uphill. On a five-hour visit that uses up most of your day.

At the top you look into a collapse crater about 2.3 by 1.9 km across and roughly 300 metres deep, with a lake and a scatter of small cones on its floor. From there you have three realistic plans, and the season decides which one works.

• Look, then go down to the village. The van up and back plus half an hour at the viewpoint leaves most of the day for Vila do Corvo, the three windmills on the Caminho dos Moinhos and a swim at Praia da Areia. This fits any timetable and is the right choice when the crater is in cloud.
• Walk the crater loop. The official trail PRC02COR goes round the inside of the crater: 4.8 km, medium, about 2 hours 30 minutes. With the van both ways it fits the five-hour window, but you will not have much time left for the village.
• Walk the crater back to the sea. The linear trail PR01COR (Cara do Índio) runs from the Caldeirão down to Vila do Corvo: 10.3 km, medium, about three hours, and it ends at Praia da Areia. It fits comfortably in the summer window. Doing the loop as well means five and a half hours of walking, which leaves about an hour of slack on a summer day and none at all on a shorter one.

Whatever you choose, be back at the harbour well before the return sailing. The boat will not wait, and the next one may be days away in winter.

The crater is often in cloud when the village is in sun. The municipality notes frequent foggy days at altitude, and annual rainfall of 1,000 to 1,500 mm, more on the high ground. One pair of travellers reached the rim in fog and rain and got a few clear minutes before it closed in again. Cloud on the rim comes and goes, so if it is socked in when you land, see the village first and go up later.

• Waterproof jacket and shoes with grip: the municipality warns that the Caldeirão sections can be wet and slippery.
• Water, sun protection and food for the day. The village has a restaurant and a few cafés; buy or pack what you need there before you go up.
• Cash. Guides disagree on whether Corvo has a working cash machine, so bring euros from Flores for the van and lunch.
• Light luggage. The municipality points out that regional boats and flights have limited space.

A day trip covers the crater and the village. It does not give you a quiet evening in the village, a second chance at a clear crater, or a morning in the valleys in birding season. If the boat timetable gives you only five hours, you may want to stay the night. Corvo has an 800-metre airstrip with SATA Air Açores flights, a small hotel, several rental houses and a free municipal campsite. The same weather that stops the boat can stop the plane, though.

How long is the boat from Flores to Corvo?

The Atlânticoline crossing from Santa Cruz das Flores to Vila do Corvo is scheduled at 40 minutes. Tour boats take longer overall because they follow the Flores coast first, but the open-water crossing is about the same.

Can I do Corvo as a day trip all year?

Yes, but on far fewer days in the off season. In 2026 the public boat sailed six days a week in summer, three days a week in May, September and early October, and only on Tuesdays and Saturdays from mid-October to April, always weather permitting.

Is there a bus or taxi to the Caldeirão?

There is no bus. Local drivers with minivans wait at the harbour and run visitors up to the crater viewpoint in about ten minutes. You arrange the price and pickup time with the driver.

What happens if the return boat is cancelled?

You stay on Corvo until the next sailing or a flight. Carry what you need for a night, keep the evening before any onward connection free, and have the numbers of the village accommodation with you.
