Corvo in winter: ferry days, flights, weather and what stays open

Corvo does not close for winter. People live there all year, the one restaurant lists daily hours and the boat from Flores keeps running. What changes is how often you can get on and off the island, and how likely the weather is to stop you. If you can build a spare day or two into the trip, a winter visit works. If you have a flight home to catch, it is a gamble.

Go if you want the island to yourself and can travel on flexible dates. The October birders have left and the boat has spare seats. Stay away if the crater is the whole point of your trip and you only have one day. The Caldeirão is often in cloud at any time of year, and in winter you get fewer chances to come back and try again.

The municipality describes the climate as oceanic, with mild temperatures all year. It gives winter averages of roughly 14 to 17 °C, and rain on the island falls mostly in autumn and winter, with 1,000 to 1,500 mm a year and more on the high ground. Fog is common higher up. The municipality also notes that because Corvo lies further north and is so small, it gets more wind than the other islands and the weather can turn quickly. So the thing to plan for is wind, rain and low cloud rather than cold.

The Pink Line (Linha Rosa) between Santa Cruz das Flores and Vila do Corvo runs all year, on a 12-seat boat, the Ariel. The crossing is timetabled at 40 minutes. In Atlânticoline's 2026 timetable, from mid-October to the end of December, it sails on Tuesdays and Saturdays only:

• Corvo to Flores at 09:00 and 16:00.
• Flores to Corvo at 10:00 and 17:00.

That gives a day tripper from Flores a little over five hours on Corvo, arriving at 10:40 and leaving at 16:00. It also means that if a Tuesday sailing is cancelled, the next scheduled boat is on Saturday. When we checked in late September 2026, most November and December sailings had no more than two or three of the twelve seats booked, so in winter you can usually get a seat, but there are only two sailing days a week. The municipality says the crossing depends on sea conditions and the time of year.

The 2027 timetable was not yet published when we checked, so look up January to March dates on atlanticoline.pt before you plan around them. A third-party site lists 2026 fares of €16.30 one way for a non-resident adult; confirm the price when you book.

Corvo's 800-metre runway beside the village takes only SATA Air Açores Dash 8 aircraft. The municipality lists flights to Flores, Horta and Ponta Delgada. SATA's summer 2026 schedule ran from 29 March to 24 October 2026, and the winter timetable applies after that. We could not find the winter frequencies for Corvo published anywhere outside the booking system, so search your dates on azoresairlines.pt rather than relying on summer patterns.

Weather cancellations affect everyone. On 25 October 2025 the President of Portugal, touring the Azores, cancelled his planned visit to Corvo because of the weather and flew on from Flores to Faial instead.

The official opening hours are weekday hours, and the municipality's 2026 listings do not say they change in winter:

• Casa do Bote, the tourist information office with the old whaleboat: Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00.
• The Corvo Wild Birds Interpretation Centre: Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:00. Its exhibition includes the island's wintering species as well as the migrants.
• Casa da Memória, part of the Ecomuseum: Monday to Friday, 09:30 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:30.
• Casa do Tempo, the Ecomuseum's history house, publishes summer hours only (1 April to 30 September), so ask at Casa do Bote whether it opens in winter.
• Restaurante Caldeirão on Caminho dos Moinhos lists daily hours from 07:00 to 23:00.

A Saturday arrival on the boat therefore finds the museum houses shut until Monday. If you are coming for a day, the Tuesday boat is the better choice. Phone Casa do Bote on +351 292 596 227 to check before you travel.

Both marked trails, the crater loop PRC02COR (4.8 km, about two and a half hours, between 400 and 560 metres) and PR01COR down from the Caldeirão to the village (10.3 km, about three hours), are on high ground where the fog sits. The municipality warns that some sections around the Caldeirão can be wet or slippery. In winter, bring waterproofs and boots with grip, check the forecast the evening before, and turn back if the cloud comes down on the rim. There is more on the loop in our Caldeirão walk guide.

The main festivals are in summer, from Saint Peter at the end of June to Our Lady of Miracles on 15 August. Winter has one tradition the municipality describes: on Christmas Eve, groups of islanders go from house to house singing and telling stories. In the 2026 timetable the last boat before Christmas leaves Flores on Tuesday 22 December, and the next on Saturday 26 December.

• Go by boat on a Tuesday if you want the museums, and stay at least until the Saturday boat, or book a flight out with a spare day behind it.
• Leave at least one free day between leaving Corvo and any flight home from another island.

• Bring cash from Flores, as reports disagree on whether there is a working cash machine on Corvo.

Does the boat to Corvo run in winter?

Yes. In the 2026 timetable the Flores to Corvo boat sails on Tuesdays and Saturdays from mid-October to the end of December, leaving Flores at 10:00 and 17:00 and Corvo at 09:00 and 16:00. Check the 2027 timetable once Atlânticoline publishes it.

Can I do a day trip to Corvo in winter?

Yes, on a Tuesday or Saturday, with about five hours on the island. Go on a Tuesday if you want the museum houses, which list weekday hours only.

Is Corvo cold in winter?

Not very. The municipality gives winter averages of about 14 to 17 °C. Wind, rain and fog are what spoil the day.

What happens if the weather cancels my boat or flight?

You stay another night. In winter the next boat can be three or four days away, so keep a spare day at both ends of the trip and keep your accommodation's number handy.
