Azores draft 2027 budget cuts agriculture funding to €131m
The Azores' draft 2027 Plan and Budget reduces agriculture funding by €15 million, while allocations for the sea economy and climate-risk management also fall.
The Government of the Azores has allocated €131 million to rural economy and food in its draft 2027 budget, down from €146 million in 2026. The draft Plan and Budget will be discussed and voted on in November at the Legislative Assembly of the Region in Horta, on Faial island.
The regional government said its 2027 annual plan would continue a strategy to value rural areas through sustainability, competitiveness and innovation in the agricultural, forestry and agri-food sectors. The plan includes support for innovation and financial restructuring of agricultural holdings, local production, market development, and agricultural income and resilience.
The draft budget sets aside €27 million for the sea economy, €10 million less than in 2026. Planned measures include putting the Azores Ocean research vessel and Tecnopolo-Martec into operation, as well as support for fishers affected by marine protected areas covering 30% of the region's sea. Commercial fishing vessel owners are to receive compensation for new access restrictions under the revised Azores Marine Protected Areas Network.
The draft assigns €31 million to sustainability, climate action and risk management, a reduction of €4 million from 2026. The investment plan also commits to increased funding for the Humanitarian Associations of Volunteer Firefighters of the Azores, while the regional executive says civil protection will remain a strategic area of public investment.
Before submission to the Regional Assembly, the draft proposals will be sent to the Island Councils and the Economic and Social Council of the Azores for opinions.
