Faial with kids: short walks, calm pools and what to skip
Planning Faial with children: Porto Pim and the other lifeguarded beaches and pools, the easy Entre Montes and Castelo Branco walks, how to see the Caldeira with small legs, the aquarium and the whale skeleton on Monte da Guia, Capelinhos with 2026 child prices, and the outings to leave for later.
Faial is an easy island for a family because so much of it is close together. In Horta, the beach at Porto Pim and the small museums on Monte da Guia are all within walking distance of each other. What needs planning is the rest: how long each walk really is, which beaches have a lifeguard, and which of the island's well-known outings are too long or too steep for small legs.
Opening hours, seasons and prices below are the ones published for 2026. They change from year to year, so check before you go.
Swimming: where the water is calmest
Porto Pim, the sandy bay just south of Horta's centre, is the easy first choice. It lies in a sheltered curve between the town and Monte da Guia, the sand is fine, the water is usually calm, and there are toilets, showers and a bar. From most places to stay in Horta you can walk there.
Four of Faial's official bathing areas have lifeguards in season, and all four fly the Blue Flag in 2026: Porto Pim, Praia do Almoxarife, the Varadouro pools and the Castelo Branco pools. The 2026 lifeguard season ran from 1 June to 30 September, except at Porto Pim, where it started on 15 June. Outside those dates nobody is on duty.
Praia do Almoxarife, north of Horta, is one of the largest beaches on the island, with Pico across the channel. Bus route 4 runs there from Horta on weekdays and on Saturday mornings, and not at all on Sundays. The beach faces the channel, so the water gets choppy in an east wind.
On the west coast near Capelo, Varadouro has natural pools in the volcanic rock with toilets, showers and a bar, and it pairs well with a morning at Capelinhos. The Castelo Branco pools on the south coast, near the airport, have changing rooms, picnic tables and a playground.
Leave Praia da Fajã on the north coast for another trip. It is a black-sand beach under the cliff, the sea is rough enough for surfers, and there is no lifeguard.
For every bathing spot in more detail, see the beaches on Faial.
Short walks that children manage
Faial's official trails are graded and timed, which makes it easy to choose one that fits.
The best family walk on the island is Entre Montes (PRC08FAI): 3.4 km, about 1 h 30, graded easy and circular. It starts from the car park at Porto Pim beach, climbs over Monte da Guia past the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia and the sunken craters below it, and comes back along the beach past the aquarium and Dabney House. You can finish with a swim.
Morro de Castelo Branco (PRC05FAI) is 3.7 km, about 1 h 30, also easy and circular. It starts at Lombega near the regional road, passes a café where you can stock up, and follows the cliff to a view of the Morro, a volcanic dome that juts into the sea and where Cory's shearwaters and terns nest. The path runs near the cliff edge, so keep small children close.
The Caldeira is the walk most visitors come for. The full rim (PRC04FAI) is 6.8 km and about 2 h 30, graded easy, but it climbs to Cabeço Gordo at 1,043 m, and the trail page warns that the final descent to the viewpoint is steep and uneven. With small children, drive to the viewpoint car park, walk through the short tunnel to look into the crater, and decide from there. Go on a clear day; in cloud you see nothing.
Under a roof: aquarium, whale skeleton and a volcano
On Monte da Guia, the Porto Pim Aquarium has a central tank and two further sets of tanks with the common coastal fish of the Azores, and a film about the deep sea around the islands. Next door, the old whaling factory keeps its original machinery and the 10 m skeleton of a female sperm whale, which children tend to remember. The Monte da Guia sites sell a combined ticket. Children up to 6 enter free, and there are junior and family tickets.
The Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre, at the western tip, is built underground beside the ash fields of the 1957-58 eruption, and older children can climb the old lighthouse. In 2026 children under 7 enter free, juniors aged 7 to 14 pay EUR 5, adults EUR 10, and a family ticket costs EUR 20. From April to October it opens daily 10:00 to 18:00; from November to March, Tuesday to Saturday 9:00 to 17:00.
The Faial Botanic Garden in Flamengos, with its Orchidarium, fills a rainy hour, and under-7s enter free. For hours and the other indoor options, see a rainy day on Faial.
What to skip with young children
The walk down into the Caldeira is graded hard, takes about 3 h 30 and is only allowed with a Faial Nature Park guide. Look in from the rim instead.
The Dez Vulcões trail (PR06FAI) runs 19.3 km from the Caldeira to Capelinhos, takes about 5 hours and is graded hard. Drive between the two.
Furna Ruim, on the Cabeço do Canto trail, is a lava cave 55 m deep that you can only look into from the edge. Older children who can be trusted near a drop will find it worth the stop; toddlers will not.
A Sunday without a car is hard work. Faial's buses do not run on Sundays, so if you are staying outside Horta, plan that day around what you can walk to, or book a taxi.
Getting around with children
A hire car makes Faial much easier with children, because the west coast, the Caldeira and Castelo Branco are all a drive from Horta and the buses are few. Ask for a child seat when you book the car. Without a car, stay in Horta near Porto Pim, where the beach, the Entre Montes walk and the Monte da Guia museums are all on foot, and take a taxi for one day out west. Bus routes and taxis are in getting around Faial.
