What to eat on Faial: fofas, molha de carne, Peter's gin and the Horta market

Faial's food, nearly all of it in Horta: molha de carne, octopus in red wine and limpets, the cream-filled fofas, the bean pudding recovered from the friars' convent, gin and tonic and Gin do Mar at Peter Café Sport, where to sit down, and the municipal market with its 2026 hours and what to take home.

Most of what you eat on Faial, you will eat in Horta. The town has the island's widest choice of restaurants, along with the municipal market and the pastry shops. This guide covers the dishes to look for, the pastry the island is known for, the drinks that came in with the sailors, and where to buy food to take home.

Opening hours here are the ones we found in October 2026. Small places change them often, so check before you make a special trip.

The island dishes

Faial's cooking stays close to the Azorean tradition, with beef and pork from the island's pastures and fish from the sea around it. The meat dish to look for is molha de carne, beef stewed for a long time in a well-seasoned sauce and eaten with bread or potatoes to soak it up. Pico, across the channel, claims it too, and you will find it on both islands.

Pork comes as torresmos de vinha d'alhos, pieces marinated in wine and garlic before frying, and as linguiça com inhames, smoked sausage with boiled yams. Morcela, the blood sausage, often shares the plate. Sopas do Espírito Santo, beef broth poured over bread, is the Holy Spirit festival dish and you are more likely to meet it at a parish feast than on a menu.

The island's seafood list starts with polvo guisado com vinho tinto, octopus stewed in red wine, and caldeirada, a mixed fish stew. Limpets come grilled, cooked with rice as arroz de lapas, or as lapas com molho Afonso, limpets in Afonso sauce, which appears on Faial's own list of dishes. Lobster, cavaco (the slipper lobster) and deep-water crab depend on what the boats bring in.

Fofas, the Faial pastry

If you try one sweet thing on the island, make it a fofa. It is a light, elongated pastry filled with a flavoured cream and finished with icing, and Faial's island guide calls it the most typical pastry on Faial. Look for it in the pastry shops of central Horta.

The bakeries also sell massa sovada, the sweet bread of the festivals, fatias douradas (fried soaked bread, the Portuguese French toast), coscorões and filhós, both fried doughs, and bolo torrado.

In December 2023 the Museu da Horta and Padaria Popular, a bakery that has worked on Faial for more than 40 years, presented a recovered recipe for pudim de feijão. It is a bean pudding that local legend traces to the friars' convent in Horta. We could not confirm that the bakery sells it every day, so ask at the counter.

Peter Café Sport and Gin do Mar

Peter Café Sport on Rua José Azevedo opened in 1918. British staff of the submarine cable companies in Horta drank gin and tonic there; it has been the house drink ever since, and the café became the meeting place for sailors crossing the Atlantic. The café also serves meals. The listing we checked in October 2026 gave hours of 09:00 to midnight Monday to Saturday, and 10:00 to midnight on Sunday. Our Horta guide tells how the bar got its name.

In 2000 José Henrique Azevedo, the third generation of the family, mixed gin with the passion fruit liqueur the Azores are known for and called the result Gin do Mar. The café produces it at 40% alcohol in 70 cl bottles, which makes it the obvious bottle to take home from Horta.

Where to sit down in Horta

  • Genuíno, on Porto Pim bay a short walk south of the main harbour, belongs to the Faial sailor Genuíno Madruga, who has sailed alone around the world twice. The dining room holds memorabilia from the voyages, and the menu leans to fish.
  • Canto da Doca, on Rua Nova near the harbour, brings meat or fish to the table raw with a hot stone, and you cook it yourself. It suits a family or a group better than a quiet dinner for two.
  • Peter Café Sport, above, for a simple meal after the drink.

The market and what to take home

The Mercado Municipal is on Rua Serpa Pinto in the centre of Horta. In October 2026 it was listed as open from 06:30 to 19:00 on weekdays and from 06:30 to 13:00 on Saturday, with no Sunday hours. Inside are a cooperative shop, a café and a small restaurant, and the regional products are fairly priced.

  • Cheese: Ilha Azul, from the island's dairy cooperative, founded in 1943. Its flamengo, an Edam-style cheese, won its category at the 2019 Queijos de Portugal competition.
  • Gin do Mar: Peter Café Sport.
  • Regional products: the cooperative shop in the market.
  • Pastries for the plane: fofas are filled with cream, so buy them the morning you leave and eat them the same day.

Cheese and bottles go in your hold luggage. For getting to the market and the restaurants without a car, see getting around Faial. For a wet day, the rainy-day guide to Horta's museums has the rest of the town.
