Caminhos Velhos

The old roads between the villages, from Ribeirinha in the east up to the Caldeira. It starts at the ruins of the 1934 church of São Mateus, which the 1998 earthquake destroyed, drops to the harbour at Boca da Ribeira and then climbs the whole Graben de Pedro Miguel, the fault trench that is one of the archipelago's principal geosites. Hard, 17.5 km, seven hours.
