The longest walk on the island, 26 kilometres of old rural paths from the church at Cedros round to the former whaling station at Varadouro. Whaling is the thread: the Cedros lookout the 1998 earthquake destroyed, the ruined one at Costado da Nau, and the two at Cabeço da Vigia and Alto das Concheiras that are still manned for the whale-watching boats. Hard, seven hours.
