The rim circuit of the Caldeira, the two-kilometre crater at the centre of Faial built by 400 000 years of eruptions and quiet spells. The path stays between 840 and 1 040 metres the whole way round, which is why the register asks for good visibility: in cloud there is nothing to see and a drop on one side. Easy in grade, 6.8 km, two and a half hours.
