When to visit Graciosa: weather, sea temperature, the summer ferry and the festivals
Graciosa is one of the driest Azores islands: July averages about 27 mm of rain in Santa Cruz, August highs reach 25.4 °C and the sea peaks at about 23 °C. Month by month weather, when the 2026 ferry ran (1 June to 28 September), Carnival, the Holy Ghost festivals and Santo Cristo in August, what runs on a shorter schedule in winter, and which month to pick.
The best time for most people to visit Graciosa is from June to September. That is when the sea is warm enough to swim, the ferry calls, July is the driest month and the island holds its biggest festival. May and October work well if you fly in and don't need to swim. Winter is quiet, mild and wet, and it suits a short visit to walk and see the island with few other visitors around, as long as you have a spare day for the flight home.
The weather month by month
Graciosa is low and fairly flat, and it is one of the driest islands in the Azores. The official climate normals for Santa Cruz, measured at 25 metres between 1978 and 2000, give the range:
- January: average high 16.4 °C, low 11.7 °C, about 80 mm of rain
- April: 17.8 °C and 12.5 °C, about 58 mm
- July: 24.1 °C and 18.2 °C, about 27 mm, the driest month
- August: 25.4 °C and 19.3 °C, about 53 mm, the warmest month
- October: 21.8 °C and 16.5 °C, about 90 mm
- December: 17.6 °C and 12.7 °C, about 108 mm, the wettest month
Two things follow. It never gets cold at sea level, so winter here means wind, cloud and showers rather than frost. And it never gets very hot either. Higher up it is a few degrees cooler: a station at Serra Branca, at 300 metres, averaged 21.8 °C in August and 13.5 °C in January.
Rain falls on more days than the totals suggest. Long-term averages put January at around 20 days with rain and July at around 11, so even in summer, expect the odd shower.
Sea temperature and swimming
The Atlantic around Graciosa is coldest in February and March, at about 15 °C, and warmest in August, at about 23 °C. It stays near 22 °C through September and is still about 20 °C in October, which is warmer than in June (about 19 °C). Late summer is the best time to swim.
Graciosa has one real sand beach, Praia de São Mateus in Vila da Praia, and natural sea pools such as Barro Vermelho on the north coast and Carapacho in the southeast. Lifeguards work the main spots only in the bathing season, which runs through the summer months. If swimming is the point of the trip, go between July and September.
Getting there in each season
Season decides how you arrive. SATA Air Açores flies to Graciosa all year, from Terceira and from Ponta Delgada on São Miguel. The Atlânticoline ferry is a summer service only: in 2026 its timetable listed sailings from Graciosa on 35 dates between 1 June and 28 September, nearly all on Mondays and Fridays, and none outside that window. The boat calls at Vila da Praia on the east coast, not at Santa Cruz. Check the current year's timetable before you plan around it.
In winter you depend on the plane. A weather warning for the central group can stop flights and ferries alike, sometimes for a day or two. Leave a spare day before an international connection at any time of year, and especially between October and March.
Festivals by month
Carnival comes first, in February. The island's clubs hold costumed ballroom dances, the bailes. In 2026 Carnival Tuesday fell on 17 February.
The Holy Ghost festivals begin at Pentecost (24 May in 2026) and carry on through Sundays into the summer. Santa Cruz, Luz and Guadalupe hold their Festa do Divino Espírito Santo in early June. Santa Cruz also celebrates São João on 24 June and São Pedro at the end of the month.
The island's main festival, Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, takes over Santa Cruz in the second week of August, with a procession, concerts and bullfights in the bullring, and emigrants come back from North America for it. In 2026 the Graciosa Sound Fest ran from 7 to 10 August as part of the festivities. For the 2024 edition the municipality expected about 3,000 visitors, on an island of about 4,400 people, and warned that transport would be short.
If you are coming for the August festival, book flights, a room and a hire car as early as you can. July and August are the months when accommodation on Graciosa fills first.
What closes in winter
Graciosa doesn't shut down in winter, but some things run on a shorter schedule. The Furna do Enxofre visitor centre, the way into the sulphur cave inside the Caldeira, opened every day from May to October under its previous schedule and only Tuesday to Saturday from November to April. It can also close at short notice in bad weather. Check the current hours before you drive up. Lifeguards leave the beaches at the end of the bathing season. Life in Santa Cruz carries on: in October 2026 the municipal cultural centre listed film screenings and a stand-up comedy night.
Which month to choose
For swimming and the island at its busiest, go from late July to mid-September, and book early if your dates fall in August. For walking and the cave without crowds, May, June, late September and October are the better choice: the weather is mild, the cave opened daily in those months under its last published schedule, and in 2026 the ferry was already running in June. From November to April, Graciosa is quiet. Fly in, expect rain on many days and keep a spare day for the flight out. And if local culture is the reason to come, aim for mid-February for Carnival, a Sunday after Pentecost for the Holy Ghost festivals, or the second week of August.
