Pico in winter: weather, what closes and whether the mountain is open
Mount Pico stays open from November to March, but the Casa da Montanha keeps 08:00 to 18:00, crampons are mandatory on ice or snow and orange warnings close it. Sea-level highs of 16 to 17 °C, a wet and foggy plateau, four Horta-Madalena ferries a day in winter 2026/27, and which days the cave centre and the whalers' museum are shut.
Most people who ask about Pico in winter want to know one thing: can I still climb the mountain? Usually yes. The trail stays open from November to March, but the hut at the bottom keeps shorter hours, the days are short, and the summit can be icy or closed for a storm warning. This guide covers the mountain first, then the weather, the ferries and flights, the closing days of the main sights, and what a winter week on the island is good for.
The mountain in winter
The Casa da Montanha, at about 1,200 m, is where every climb starts: you register there and collect a GPS tracker. Under the regulation (Portaria 64/2023), between 1 November and 31 March it opens every day from 08:00 to 18:00. In summer it is open around the clock. It is closed on 25 December and 1 January. Outside those hours, visitors who don't live in the Azores can only go up with an authorised guide company booked through the online platform.
The short days are the real limit. On 21 December 2026 the sun sets over Madalena at about 17:38, and the official advice is to start down at least four hours before sunset. The way up and the way down each take three to four hours on average. If you register when the hut opens at 08:00, you should be on top by midday at the latest and heading down by about 13:30. A late start in December means turning back before the crater.
In winter, three rules apply:
- The park can close the mountain when IPMA, the Portuguese weather service, issues an orange or red warning. It did so on 4 February 2026, for example. On a yellow warning the climb is officially not recommended.
- Crampons are mandatory when there is ice or snow on the route. The summit, at 2,351 m, averages about 2 °C, and snow is common up there in the cooler months. It is one of the few places in the Azores where you see it at all.
- If you paid online and the mountain is closed on your day, the fee is refunded in full.
The top is generally about 10 °C colder than the coast. Take a warm layer, gloves and a hat even if Madalena is mild when you leave. Fees, the tracker deposit and the booking rules are in our guide to climbing Mount Pico.
What the weather is like
Pico doesn't get cold at sea level. At the airport near Madalena, average highs run from about 17.5 °C in December down to about 16 °C in February, the coolest month, and nights stay around 12 to 13 °C. Rainfall there is about 110 to 145 mm a month in December, January and February, with rain on most days, and humidity sits around 80 percent all year. Expect about three hours of sunshine a day.
The island is not one climate, though. The north-east coast around São Roque and Prainha is much wetter than Madalena, and the plateau in the middle is colder and far wetter again. A station at Cabeço do Teicho, about 850 m up, averaged highs of about 12 °C and lows of about 7 °C in January between 2017 and 2024, with more than 570 mm of rain that month and humidity near 90 percent. Fog is common up there. If you drive the road across the middle, between the lakes, slow down and expect to see very little.
Daylight runs from about 08:06 to 17:38 on 21 December 2026, roughly nine and a half hours. By mid-February 2027 it is already about 07:43 to 18:33.
Getting there and around
The ferry from Horta on Faial to Madalena runs all winter, but less often. Atlânticoline's Linha Azul drops to four return crossings a day for winter 2026/27. The timetable valid until 31 December 2026 has boats from Horta at 07:30, 10:45, 14:15 and 17:15 and back from Madalena at 08:15, 11:30, 15:00 and 18:00, with a few extra sailings on Wednesdays and Thursdays. On 25 December the 14:15 and 15:00 do not run. The crossing takes about 30 minutes. The Linha Verde to São Jorge drops to two return trips on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and one on other days. Check atlanticoline.pt before you travel, because weather cancellations are posted there.
Flights are the other weak point. SATA Air Açores cancelled 1,351 flights across its network between May 2025 and April 2026, 57 percent of them for weather. Leave a spare day before any flight home that you cannot afford to miss. Car hire, buses and taxis on the island are covered in getting around Pico, and the ferry timings for a short visit in the day trip from Faial.
What closes and what stays open
Most sights stay open in winter, but on fewer days. Plan your week around the closing days rather than finding them out at the door:
- Gruta das Torres, the lava tube near Madalena: from 1 November to 31 March the visitor centre opens Tuesday to Saturday, 09:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:00. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays, 25 December and 1 January, and may close in bad weather. Tours into the cave restarted in July 2026, after two years shut, and winter tour times are not yet published, so check the online ticket office before you go. More in our Gruta das Torres guide.
- Museu dos Baleeiros, the whalers' museum in Lajes do Pico: from 1 October to 31 March it opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:30 to 17:00, and closes on Mondays.
- Pico's 26 official bathing areas (2026) are only supervised from June to September. The sea is about 16 to 17 °C in winter, which is cold for most people, and the rock pools are only as calm as the swell outside them. Our swimming guide lists them.
Mondays are the awkward day, because the museum and the cave centre are both shut, so keep a Monday for a coastal walk. On Sundays the cave centre is closed but the museum is open.
What winter is good for
Whale watching goes on all year. Trips from Lajes do Pico may be postponed or cancelled when the sea is rough, so leave room in your plans to try again. Espaço Talassa, one of the operators in Lajes, says sperm whales live around the island all year and that blue, fin, sei and humpback whales pass in March and April on their way north. If you want a chance of the big baleen whales, aim for late March. See whale watching from Lajes do Pico.
Low coastal walks are the other thing winter is good for. They keep away from the plateau fog and are far shorter than the mountain, which suits the short days. Our guide to coastal walks on Pico describes the routes. Check for closures on trails.visitazores.com on the morning you set off, because the list changes after storms.
