The south-coast mistérios walk, from the São João forest reserve across the lava of the 1718 and 1720 eruptions. Mistério — mystery — is what the islanders called ground like this, because nobody understood what had made it. The route also passes the tidal wells at Arruda, Admoiro, Verdoso and Maré do Rego, which were the village water supply. Easy, 8.5 km.
