A circuit through the protected forest on top of the island. From the Pico Alto car park a stairway beside a military building reaches the summit; the loop then runs north on a forest lane past a detour to the Miradouro da Caldeira and its view over the west coast. It comes back south by the Casa do Guarda, where the Great Route crosses it, and past the memorial to the 1989 air crash. Medium, 6.2 km, two hours.
