What a São Jorge trip costs in 2026: ferry fares, flights, car, beds and guided trips

What São Jorge costs in 2026: Atlânticoline's published ferry fares (EUR 17.30 one way to Pico, EUR 46.00 return for a car), whether to bring a car or hire one, why the EUR 61 Azores Fare is for residents only, the October 2026 fuel cap, the one published campsite rate, canyoning and kayak prices, and which prices you have to ask for.

Most of what you spend on São Jorge falls into two groups. The ferry fares, the fuel cap and the guided canyoning and kayak trips have published prices you can add up at home. Flights, hotel rooms and hire cars are priced by date, so for those this guide tells you where to ask rather than inventing a number.

Every figure below carries the year it was published. Prices change, so check before you book.

The ferry: what you can add up at home

Atlânticoline's Linha Verde links Velas with Pico and Faial all year. In summer other lines add sailings, including Calheta on the Lilac Line. The 2026 fares from Velas for a visitor are below; Calheta costs the same on every route we checked.

  • To Pico (Cais do Pico at São Roque, or Madalena): EUR 17.30 one way, EUR 34.60 return for an adult aged 13 to 64.
  • To Horta (Faial): EUR 25.50 one way, EUR 51.00 return.
  • To Praia da Vitória (Terceira), summer only: EUR 42.80 one way, EUR 85.60 return.
  • Children aged 3 to 12 pay half: EUR 8.65 one way to Pico. Over-65s pay EUR 12.10 one way to Pico.
  • A bicycle costs EUR 7.50 one way to Pico or Horta, EUR 10.00 to Terceira.

Residents of the Azores pay less, EUR 11.20 one way to Pico, so a lower fare quoted by a local is not a mistake.

Cancelling is free up to five days before you sail. After that you get 85% back, and nothing once the boat has left. If Atlânticoline changes or cancels the sailing, you can ask for a full refund. Days and times are in the day-trip guide.

Bring a car, or hire one on the island?

A car up to 5.4 m long and under 1.9 m high costs EUR 26.70 one way or EUR 46.00 return between Velas and Pico, EUR 34.20 one way or EUR 57.70 return to Horta, and EUR 58.70 one way or EUR 88.70 return to Terceira. The driver needs a passenger ticket on top. A motorbike costs EUR 9.60 one way to Pico.

So two adults bringing a car over from Pico and back pay EUR 115.20 in 2026: two return tickets at EUR 34.60 and the car at EUR 46.00. From Horta the same trip is EUR 159.70, from Terceira EUR 259.90.

Whether that beats hiring on São Jorge depends on the hire quote, and none of the island's firms publishes rates online. Ask Velas Auto in Velas or the firms listed on Visit Azores for a price for your dates, then compare. Two points tip the balance. Some Linha Verde sailings do not take vehicles, so check your sailing before you plan around the car. And a hire car is one less booking to break if the sea cancels a crossing.

Fuel is capped across the Azores. From 1 October 2026 the maximum is EUR 1.924 a litre for unleaded 95 and EUR 1.939 for diesel, up from EUR 1.620 and EUR 1.474 in January. The island is about 53 km long, so a tank goes a long way, but fill up before you head east. Where the pumps are is in practical essentials on São Jorge.

Buses and taxis

The bus is the cheapest way round, with weekday and Saturday timetables and nothing on Sundays. Its fares are not posted online. Taxis have no published Azores tariff that we could find, so agree the fare before you get in. Routes and times are in getting around São Jorge.

Flights: no fixed price for visitors

SATA Air Açores flies into São Jorge's airport, 6 km from Velas, from Ponta Delgada and Terceira. Visitor fares move with the date, so there is no single figure to give.

You may read about the EUR 61 return "Azores Fare" (EUR 35 one way). It is real, but only people with tax residence in the Azores can buy it. If you are flying to the Azores with Azores Airlines anyway, ask about the Azores Air Pass: it is for non-residents with a ticket to or from somewhere outside the archipelago and allows up to three stops of more than 24 hours. It is sold through the call centre and the airline's own shops. Price São Jorge as part of that ticket and as a separate booking, and take the cheaper.

A bed for the night

We found no hotel or rural house on São Jorge that prints its rates; they are quoted by date. Book early for July and August and for the Velas Cultural Week in July.

The one published price is the campsite in Velas, run for the town council by a local sports club: EUR 4 per person per day in 2026, on a list marked as being updated. The campsites at Urzelina and Calheta publish no prices, so phone them. Seasons and contacts are in camping on São Jorge.

If you stopped on São Miguel first, you will have paid a tourist tax there: EUR 2 a night for up to three nights, charged since 1 January 2025 by that island's six municipalities. São Jorge's two municipalities, Velas and Calheta, are not part of that scheme. Your booking confirmation shows any tax that does apply.

Guided trips with a price on the door

The outdoor operators publish their 2026 rates, which makes them the easiest part of the budget:

  • Aventour's beginner canyon costs EUR 70 per person for two or more, EUR 55 for a child up to 12, and EUR 140 if you book alone.
  • Discover Experience charges EUR 80 per person for its canyoning trip, plus EUR 15 per person if you want collecting from your accommodation.
  • Its sea kayak trips start at EUR 30 for an hour in the bay at Ribeira Seca and at EUR 80 for three hours to Fajã dos Vimes.

What each trip involves, and the minimum ages, are in canyoning, coasteering and sea kayaking on São Jorge.

What you can price before you leave

  • Ferry tickets and a car on the boat: fixed, on Atlânticoline's fare table.
  • Canyoning and kayak trips: published per person.
  • The Velas campsite: one published daily rate.
  • Flights, rooms and hire cars: quote by date, as early as you can for summer.
