How many days on São Miguel: what fits in three, five or seven days
Three full days covers Sete Cidades, Furnas and Ponta Delgada; five adds the north coast, the east and a spare day for cloud; a week leaves time for a boat and a long walk. Day-by-day plans with drive times from Ponta Delgada, the 2026 hours and prices for Terra Nostra and Poça da Dona Beija, the Lagoa do Fogo shuttle dates, and what Mondays and Sundays close.
Three full days is the least that makes sense on São Miguel. That is enough for the two crater lakes in the west, a day in Furnas and an evening in Ponta Delgada. Five days adds the north coast, the east and a spare day for weather. A week leaves time for a long walk and a boat trip.
The island is not big. From Ponta Delgada it takes about 25 minutes by car to reach the rim above Sete Cidades, about 40 minutes to Furnas and just under an hour to Nordeste village (route-planner times; allow more on mountain roads). Cloud decides more days here than distance does. The crater viewpoints sit at 500 to 800 metres and can vanish in fog while Ponta Delgada is in sunshine. Build every plan with a day you can move.
The drive times below come from a route planner. Opening hours and prices are from autumn 2026 and change from year to year, so check them before you go.
Base yourself in Ponta Delgada first
For a stay of up to five days, one base in or near Ponta Delgada works. Everything in this article is a day trip from there, and the city has the restaurants, the airport and the buses. With a week, consider two nights in Furnas or on the north coast so the east is not a long drive there and back. Our guide to where to stay on São Miguel compares the areas.
A hire car makes all of the plans below work. Without one, Ponta Delgada, Furnas and the north coast are possible by bus, but the crater rims are not. Line 110 to Furnas leaves Ponta Delgada at 07:15 and 15:15, and the last bus back leaves Furnas at 17:10 (timetable in force since September 2025). The details are in getting around São Miguel without a car.
Three days
Day 1: Sete Cidades. Drive up to the Vista do Rei viewpoint in the morning, before cloud builds on the rim. If it is clear, walk the PR03SMI trail from the viewpoint down into Sete Cidades village: 7.5 km, linear, about two hours, mostly downhill. You will need a taxi or a second driver to get back to the car. In the afternoon, go down to the west coast at Mosteiros, about 35 minutes from Ponta Delgada, or to the hot sea pool at Ponta da Ferraria.
Day 2: Furnas. Go early. Parque Terra Nostra is open from 10:30 to 16:30 and costs EUR 17 in 2026, which includes the garden and the iron-brown thermal pool. The cozido, a stew cooked in the hot ground by Lagoa das Furnas, comes out of the ground late in the morning, and the restaurants want a booking the day before. Poça da Dona Beija stays open until 23:00, with last entry at 21:30, so you can leave it for the end of the day. It costs EUR 12 before 17:30 and EUR 16 from 18:00 in 2026. The Furnas day plan has the order that works.
Day 3: Ponta Delgada and Lagoa do Fogo. Spend the morning in town: the Mercado da Graça, the old streets, the Carlos Machado Museum (closed on Mondays). In the afternoon drive up to the Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint, about half an hour away.
Check the dates for Lagoa do Fogo. From 1 August to 30 September 2026 the road between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água was closed to visitors' cars from 09:00 to 20:00, and a shuttle ran from the Caldeira Velha car park for EUR 8. The same rules applied over the Easter school holidays. Outside those dates you drive up yourself.
If it rains on day 1 or day 3, swap it with Furnas: the hot pools work in any weather.
Five days
Add these two days to the three above.
Day 4: the north coast. Ribeira Grande is about 20 minutes from Ponta Delgada. Caldeira Velha, with its warm pools, is just above the town; book a time slot on the parks' ticket site. Then drive about 15 minutes east to the Gorreana tea plantation and walk the PRC28SMI loop through the tea fields: 3.3 km, about 90 minutes, easy. Porto Formoso, the second tea factory, is closed on Sundays. Furnas is about 25 minutes further on if you want an evening in the pools.
Day 5: the east. The loop through Povoação and Nordeste is the longest drive on the island, and the viewpoints along it fill a whole day. Leave early. The Nordeste and Povoação guide has the route and the stops.
With five days you also have a day in reserve. Keep the second half of the trip loose, so that if the west is clouded over on day 1 you can try Sete Cidades again later.
Seven days
A week adds time on foot and on the water.
A boat. Whale-watching trips leave from Ponta Delgada. Futurismo lists a half day at EUR 70 per adult in 2026. Put it early in the week, because boats cancel in rough sea and you want a second chance. From June to the middle of October the boat to the Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo, a flooded crater just offshore, is another option. In 2026 the season ran from 12 June to 11 October, with 400 visitors a day at most. Vila Franca is about 25 minutes from Ponta Delgada.
A long walk. The PRC06SMI circuit around Lagoa das Furnas is 9.4 km and takes about three hours, past the fumaroles where the cozido is cooked. Hiking on São Miguel suggests others by length and grade.
A slow day. Leave one day with no driving: a beach on the south coast or a second evening in Ponta Delgada.
What changes the plan
- Cloud on the rims: look at a webcam before driving up to Sete Cidades or Lagoa do Fogo, and go early.
- Mondays: the Carlos Machado Museum is closed. Use Monday for a day outdoors.
- Sundays: Porto Formoso's tea factory is closed. Gorreana is a good alternative.
- Season: the Lagoa do Fogo shuttle and the islet boat run only part of the year. Check the 2027 dates when they are published.
Quick answers
Is two days enough for São Miguel? Two days covers Sete Cidades and Furnas if the weather holds. There is no spare day, so one foggy morning costs you a sight.
How many days do you need on São Miguel? Three full days for the main sights, five to see the north and east without rushing, and a week if you want to hike or take a boat out.
Can you see São Miguel without a car? Partly. Ponta Delgada, Furnas and the north coast work by bus, but the last bus back from Furnas leaves at 17:10 (2025 timetable). The crater rims need a car, a taxi or a tour.
What is the best base on São Miguel? Ponta Delgada, for a stay of up to five days. Everything is a day trip from there. With a week, add two nights in Furnas or on the north coast.
