Pico da Vara

The route to Pico da Vara, at 1 103 metres the highest point of São Miguel, through the Tronqueira protected area and the Pico da Vara nature reserve — the last habitat of the Azores bullfinch. It starts at the forest guard house at Atalhada above Santo António Nordestinho and climbs steadily to the summit ridge. Hard, 7.3 km, three hours, and often in cloud.
