The posts are split between hospitals in Ponta Delgada and Terceira.

The Azores government has announced two recruitment procedures for 40 nurses in regional hospitals by the end of the year. Twenty-five positions are for the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo in Ponta Delgada. The other 15 are for Terceira's Hospital do Santo Espírito.

Regional Health and Social Security Secretary Mónica Seidi announced the recruitment at a ceremony marking entry into the profession, organised by the Azores regional section of the Order of Nurses.

The number of nurses in the Regional Health Service has grown 17% in the past six years, Seidi said. It rose from 1,686 nurses with employment ties in 2019 to about 2,000 now. Seidi said the increase was more pronounced in island health units.

Radio Atlântida reported that recruitment based on an annual needs map will be introduced next year in the region's three hospitals. Between 2024 and 2025, recruitment procedures for 85 vacancies were opened in the three hospitals.

Since 2023, about €17 million in retroactive payments has been paid to nurses under an agreement with sector unions. Seidi said some specific situations still need to be resolved. The government and institutions are attentive to needs involving nurse managers and specialist nurses.

Update — 2026-10-07

Seidi said investment in nursing careers within the Regional Health Service has increased more than any other area, as the regional government is correcting injustices resulting from about 20 years of errors. She also said the service was counting on newly qualified nurses and invited them to choose the Azores as a place to remain.
