Mistérios Negros

The hardest short walk on Terceira, through the Mistérios Negros — a field of trachyte domes thrown up in the 1761 eruption, now a nature reserve inside the Serra de Santa Bárbara park. From Lagoa do Negro the path narrows into dense endemic scrub of Azorean heather, juniper and laurel, and the ground between the domes is peat. 5.2 km, graded hard, two and a half hours.
