A short circuit inside the Caldeira de Guilherme Moniz, a 23 000-year-old crater whose Macaronesian woodland and peat bogs recharge the aquifers under it. The name is the point: cart ruts worn into the lava by centuries of ox carts coming into the crater for wood are still legible in the rock. Graded medium, 4 km, two and a half hours over rough ground.
