José Manuel Bolieiro said Azorean autonomy has a strategic place in international economic and geopolitical affairs.

José Manuel Bolieiro said at the opening of the Convenção Jovem dos 50 Anos da Autonomia in Horta, on Faial island, that Azorean autonomy currently asserts itself as a "centralidade estratégica no mundo". He highlighted the Azores' role in the global economy, geopolitics and economic geostrategy.

According to a PSD/Açores press office note, Bolieiro said autonomy allowed the Region to project itself in the world. He said development comes through the quality of knowledge and its transformation into wealth, rather than industrial quantity. He also left a message of confidence and hope for younger generations.

JSD/Açores president Luís Raposo stressed the importance of new generations' commitment to autonomy. He defended continuing the work already done and not taking for granted the legacy left by its protagonists. Raposo said his generation must provide future generations with stronger Azores, better prepared and with more opportunities.

PSD/Açores promotes the convention through the Gabinete de Estudos Regional in partnership with JSD/Açores. According to PSD/Açores, the sessions are led by protagonists from the party's first generations on the islands where they take place.

The invited speakers in Horta were Luís Garcia, Carlos Ferreira, Fernando Faria and Eugénio Leal. According to PSD/Açores, they shared memories and reflections on the process of building autonomy in different areas. The convention will continue in Ponta Delgada on 2026-11-01 and in Angra do Heroísmo on 2026-12-01.
