What a Faial trip costs in 2026: the Capelinhos ticket, whale trips, ferries and fuel
The fixed costs of a Faial trip in 2026: EUR 10 for the Capelinhos volcano centre and its winter closing days, EUR 5 for the botanic garden, the free Porto Pim aquarium, whale watching from Horta from EUR 70, the EUR 8.20 ferry to Pico, the October 2026 fuel cap, the free bathing places, and a sample week for two of about EUR 280.
On Faial, flights, rooms and the hire car take most of the budget, and only your dates can price those. The smaller costs are easier to pin down, because the volcano centre, the garden, the boats and the fuel have published prices. This guide lists them with the year each figure applies to, so you can add up a week before you book.
Prices change, so check each source shortly before you go.
Capelinhos: EUR 10 for the volcano centre
In October 2026 the regional parks service listed these prices for the interpretation centre at the Capelinhos volcano:
- EUR 10 for adults aged 15 to 64.
- EUR 5 for children aged 7 to 14 and for over-65s.
- EUR 20 for a family of two adults and children up to 14.
- Nothing for children up to 6.
The ticket includes the exhibition, built underground beside the 1957-58 eruption site, and the climb up the old lighthouse, which staff can close in bad weather. Watch the season: from 1 April to 31 October the centre opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00, but from 1 November to 31 March it opens Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 17:00 and closes on Sundays and Mondays. Last entry is an hour before closing. The walk around the crater and the Caldeira rim are in Capelinhos and the Caldeira.
The botanic garden: EUR 5, and a free aquarium
The Faial Botanic Garden, in Flamengos, on the edge of Horta, charged EUR 5 per adult in 2026, EUR 2 for children aged 7 to 14 and for over-65s, and EUR 10 for a family. It keeps the same hours as Capelinhos, so it also closes on Sundays and Mondays from November.
The small aquarium at Porto Pim, the parks service's Live Fish Station, costs nothing. It opens Tuesday to Saturday all year, 10:00 to 18:00 until the end of October and 10:00 to 17:00 from November. Horta's other museums are in rainy-day Faial.
Whale watching: the biggest ticket of the week
Naturalist, a Horta start-up linked to the University of Lisbon whose guides are biologists, listed its whale and dolphin trip from EUR 70 per person in October 2026. The trip lasts three to four hours in a semi-rigid boat, steered toward the animals by a lookout on the cliffs who calls the skipper by radio. The company says about one passenger in ten gets seasick. Two adults should budget about EUR 140. Seasons and the old whaling lookouts are covered in whale watching from Horta.
Ferries: EUR 8.20 to Pico
Atlânticoline's 2026 fares for a non-resident adult, one way:
- Horta to Madalena (Pico): EUR 8.20, or EUR 16.40 return. Children aged 3 to 12 pay EUR 4.10, over-65s EUR 5.75, and babies up to 2 travel free.
- Horta to Cais do Pico (São Roque): EUR 12.20.
The Madalena boat runs all year and takes about half an hour, which makes Pico an easy day out. Longer routes, to São Jorge and beyond, change with the season; read Faial ferries before you plan a crossing, and day trip from Faial to Pico for what fits into the day.
Fuel and the car
The Azores regional government caps fuel prices. From October 2026 the cap was EUR 1.924 a litre for unleaded 95 and EUR 1.939 for diesel, up from EUR 1.620 and EUR 1.474 in January. A 40-litre fill of petrol therefore costs about EUR 77. We found no hire rates worth quoting, since they move with the season; book early for July, August and Semana do Mar week. Buses and taxis are in getting around Faial.
What costs nothing
All six bathing places we list for Faial are free: Porto Pim and Conceição beaches in Horta, Almoxarife, the Varadouro pools, Castelo Branco and the harbour at Pedro Miguel. So are the painted quay walls of the marina and the walk up Monte da Guia. Where to swim is in beaches on Faial.
Tourist tax: none we could find
Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel, has charged EUR 2 a night since 2025. For Horta we found no published tourist tax regulation in 2026. Check your booking confirmation and the bill anyway.
Flights: the EUR 61 fare is for residents
The "Azores Fare" of EUR 61 return between islands is only for people with tax residence in the Azores. Visitors pay normal fares, priced by date.
A sample week for two
Using the 2026 figures above for two adults: Capelinhos EUR 20, the botanic garden EUR 10, a whale trip EUR 140, a day on Pico by ferry EUR 32.80 and a 40-litre tank of petrol about EUR 77. That comes to roughly EUR 280 before rooms, car and food. A family of four with children aged 7 to 14 would pay EUR 20 at Capelinhos and EUR 10 at the garden on the family tickets.

What to eat on Faial: fofas, molha de carne, Peter's gin and the Horta market
Faial's food, nearly all of it in Horta: molha de carne, octopus in red wine and limpets, the cream-filled fofas, the bean pudding recovered from the friars' convent, gin and tonic and Gin do Mar at Peter Café Sport, where to sit down, and the municipal market with its 2026 hours and what to take home.
Best time to visit Faial: weather by month, the sea, hydrangeas and Semana do Mar
June to September is the safe window for Faial: July is the driest month in Horta (about 42 mm), the sea reaches 22 to 23 °C, the four lifeguarded beaches are staffed from June (Porto Pim from mid-June in 2026), the summer ferries run and the hydrangeas that give the Blue Island its name are in flower. Semana do Mar ran from 31 July to 9 August in 2026. From October the ferries thin out and Capelinhos shortens its hours.
