Arriving on Flores by yacht: Lajes, the anchorage, the moorings and the 2026 landing rules

Flores is a common first landfall after an Atlantic crossing, but it is not a port of entry, and in 2026 crews arriving from outside Schengen may not go ashore without GNR authorisation. What the Lajes harbourmaster published in May 2026: the inner harbour closed during rebuilding (finish expected 2028 or 2029), anchoring in 12 to 15 metres on sand, three Clube Naval buoys at about €10 a day, VHF 16/12 from 08:00 to 18:00, Fajã Grande in easterlies, and what there is ashore.

Flores is the westernmost island of the Azores and a common first stop for yachts crossing the Atlantic from the west. For years Lajes das Flores let crews step ashore before clearing in elsewhere. In 2026 that changed, and the harbour is a building site that may not have room for you. What follows is what the harbour staff and the port authority published this year.

Who may go ashore in 2026

Flores is not a port of entry and has no border post. In May 2026 the assistant harbourmaster at Lajes, Jorge Ventura, published the new position on Noonsite: crews arriving from inside the Schengen Zone may move freely on the island, but crews arriving from outside it must not disembark without reporting to the GNR, the Guarda Nacional Republicana, on +351 961 196 141. The GNR decides whether to allow it. The old exception, which let non-Schengen crews explore and then clear in at their next port, is no longer given as a matter of course.

The restriction is on people, not boats. No vessel is turned away from a spot the dockmaster assigns. The process costs nothing, and the harbourmaster's note is blunt that offering money for permission is a crime in Portugal.

To clear in properly, sail on to one of the ports of entry. For yachts from outside the EU these are Horta on Faial, Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, and Praia da Vitória and Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira, according to the Noonsite formalities page (May 2026).

The state of the harbour

Hurricane Lorenzo destroyed the pier at Lajes, the island's only commercial port, in October 2019, and storm Efrain damaged it again in December 2022. Rebuilding is under way. Noonsite's May 2026 update says it is not expected to finish before 2028; RTP reported in October 2025 a completion date of 2029 and an overall investment of €217 million. Either way, plan on a building site for the next few seasons.

Portos dos Açores, the port authority, still lists the marina with 30 berths on two floating pontoons with 6-metre fingers, a 20-tonne crane, and an office open 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00 (+351 292 593 148). In 2026, though, the harbour staff describe the harbour as technically closed until further notice and the inner harbour as closed to traffic. Do not count on a berth.

Anchoring and the moorings

Expect to anchor. The harbour allows it at spots it directs, which move with the dredging and the commercial traffic. Depth is 12 to 15 metres on sand. Anchor either side of the new pier and leave it plenty of room, because cargo ships manoeuvre in the basin and tie up there. If you arrive at night, anchoring is the only option. Carry proper ground tackle and a working tender.

The Clube Naval rents out three mooring buoys on the north side of the jetty, for yachts up to 10 tonnes. Noonsite put the price at about €10 a day in 2026. They go to whoever arrives first, and a work boat helps you pick one up.

If the work allows, you may get a short stop alongside for fuel, water and supplies. Arrange it with the dockmaster, have strong fenders and long lines ready, and expect to raft three deep. A fee for visiting yachts was under discussion for 2026 but not confirmed when the harbourmaster wrote; ask on arrival.

Calling the harbour

There are no reservations. The harbourmaster asks crews not to call ahead about space, because it is first come, first served and changes daily in the season. Keep watch on VHF 16 and 12, and call Lajes Harbour once you can see it; they may call you first. The harbour keeps watch from 08:00 to 18:00 and answers WhatsApp text messages on +351 913 956 619 (2026). It does not work around the clock.

Fly the Q flag. If nobody has given you a spot yet, stay aboard until the harbour tells you that you can stay where you are. Do not book flights or island tours before you are ashore: a fixed date puts pressure on you at sea.

When the wind is in the east

Lajes is on the south-east coast and has little protection from easterly wind and swell. In strong winds from the east or north-east the inner harbour turns rough and hard to manoeuvre in. In fresh easterlies, Noonsite and the harbour suggest anchoring in Fajã Grande Bay on the west coast instead. It is more comfortable and safer, but you cannot clear in there, and the same rule on going ashore applies. Move round to Lajes when the wind drops, or sail on.

Ashore at Lajes

Facilities are basic. The single-storey municipal building on the quay, just up from the steps, has four free cold showers and toilets, shared with the public and the fishermen, with a self-service laundry next door (Noonsite, March 2026). There is no diesel in the port. Shops and restaurants are in town, a ten-minute walk up the hill. If you need shore power, a big repair or a chandlery, go to Horta.

Once you are cleared to land, Lajes das Flores itself is worth a walk; see our guide to Lajes das Flores. For crew flying in or out, read getting to Flores first, because flights are often cancelled. Heading north to Corvo? Its harbour is covered in arriving on Corvo by yacht.

All of this comes from the 2026 updates and will change as the port is rebuilt. Check Noonsite and the harbour before you leave.

Quick answers

Can I clear into the Azores on Flores? No. Flores has no border post. Yachts from outside the EU clear in at Horta, Ponta Delgada, Praia da Vitória or Angra do Heroísmo.

Can non-Schengen crew go ashore at Lajes das Flores in 2026? Only if the GNR authorises it. Report to them on +351 961 196 141 before anyone leaves the boat. There is no charge.

Can I get a marina berth at Lajes? Unlikely in 2026. The inner harbour is closed while the port is rebuilt; plan to anchor in 12 to 15 metres on sand, or take one of three Clube Naval buoys at about €10 a day.

Is there diesel at Lajes das Flores? Noonsite says there is no diesel in the port. The harbourmaster mentions that a short alongside stop for fuel and water may be possible, by arrangement with the dockmaster; do not arrive relying on it.
