Canyoning on Flores: levels, routes, 2026 prices and who guides

Flores has more than forty canyoning routes and two local companies that guide them, with very different ideas of what a level means. Ocidental Adventures' 2026 prices run from €55 for a two-hour introduction with a 9-metre top abseil to €220 for a day ending in the sea, with the 115-metre descent of the Poço do Bacalhau waterfall at €200; WestCanyon quotes on request. Which trip suits a first-timer, what is included, the weather and cancellation rules, and where canyoning fits in a Flores trip.

Canyoning on Flores means walking, sliding, jumping and abseiling down a stream bed until you reach the sea or the foot of a waterfall. Before you book, decide how much height you can handle. A canyoning day here can top out at a 9-metre abseil or at a 115-metre one, and the two local companies put very different things under the word "level". This guide sets their trips side by side so you can choose the right one, along with what the trips cost in 2026 and what to ask when you book.

Visit Azores lists canyoning on three islands, São Miguel, São Jorge and Flores, and says Flores has the most varied routes, from big vertical descents to simple ones. Azores Airlines puts the island's total at more than forty routes. The canyons the trips below name are Ribeira dos Ilhéus and Ribeira das Barrosas in the north and the stream above Poço do Bacalhau in the west, plus a short beginners' descent on the east coast by the Alagoa islets.

Two companies, two level scales

Two companies based in Santa Cruz das Flores run guided descents: Ocidental Adventures and WestCanyon. Both include the wetsuit, boots, helmet, harness, insurance and photos, and both tell you to bring swimwear and a towel. Their scales do not match, though. WestCanyon's Level III has a 45-metre top drop, while Ocidental's Level 3 is a longer version of its Level 2 with the same 45-metre abseil. Compare the numbers rather than the level names.

Ocidental Adventures: the trips and 2026 prices

Ocidental publishes prices on its activities page. These were the prices per person in October 2026:

  • Batismo de Canyoning, €55. A two-hour introduction on the east coast with five abseils, the longest 9 metres. It meets at the Alagoa picnic park at 9:00 and finishes in a natural pool that looks out on the Alagoa islets.
  • Além Inferior (Level 1), €70. Four hours, seven abseils up to 16 metres, with jumps and natural water slides. It starts at 8:30.
  • Ilhéus Médio (Level 2), €110. Five hours. The approach follows part of the path from Ponta Delgada to Ponta Ruiva, about 25 minutes on foot. There are eight abseils, one of them a 45-metre drop beside tall basalt columns like those at Rocha dos Bordões, and the trip ends by the ruins of an old water mill.
  • Ilhéus Médio and Inferior (Level 3), €160. The same top section continued down the lower canyon, 14 abseils in five to six hours, finishing with a view of the north coast.
  • Poço do Bacalhau (Level 4), €200. Seven hours, 13 abseils and a 45-minute approach, ending with a 115-metre descent of the waterfall above the pool at Fajã Grande. It starts at 9:00 from May to September and at 9:30 from October to April.
  • Barrosas, €220. Seven hours from Ponta Delgada harbour, with a 45-minute walk in, nine abseils up to 23 metres, slides and jumps. It ends in the sea facing Corvo, and a boat picks the group up and runs past the Galo and Catedral sea caves on the way back.

If you need a lift to the start, Ocidental adds €30 or €40 return depending on the trip. Every booking needs at least two people unless you pay for a private trip. Guiding is in Portuguese, English and Spanish. In early October 2026 the online calendar showed no open dates for Poço do Bacalhau or Barrosas, so contact the company if those are the trips you want.

WestCanyon: four levels, prices on request

WestCanyon does not publish prices. You send a request through its booking form or call +351 968 266 206, and the company replies with a price. Its four levels are described in detail:

  • Experiences (Level I). About three and a half hours, with up to seven abseils and a top drop of 18 metres. The walk in takes about a minute and the walk out about ten. WestCanyon recommends it if you have never been canyoning.
  • Advanced Experiences (Level II). About four and a half hours with eight abseils. Most are around 20 metres, and one 45-metre abseil goes down a well-known waterfall. There are no jumps.
  • Discover (Level III). About five and a half hours with up to 14 abseils, a 45-metre top drop and more technical moves. It is aimed at people who have been canyoning before.
  • Adventure (Level IV). Six to seven hours, with up to 12 abseils, a 115-metre waterfall and a 60-metre single abseil. Expect a walk of up to 50 minutes to reach the canyon.

Levels I to III start with a practice session somewhere safe, where the guides teach the equipment and the technique before you step into the canyon. Every WestCanyon level includes a snack, as do all of Ocidental's trips except the two-hour Batismo.

Which trip to book

If you have never abseiled, take a two-hour or Level I trip: Ocidental's Batismo, its Além Inferior, or WestCanyon's Experiences. All three keep the drops under 20 metres and the walks short. If the first one goes well, a 45-metre trip later in the week is a realistic second step.

Book the 45-metre trips (Ocidental's Level 2 or 3, WestCanyon's Level II or III) if you are fit and fine with heights, and ideally after one easier descent. Save the 115-metre Poço do Bacalhau descent for people who have canyoned several times. It is a full day, and the approach alone is 45 minutes.

Barrosas suits a group that wants one long day with sea, caves and a canyon together. It is also the trip most exposed to the weather, because the ending depends on the boat.

Weather and timing

Ocidental's terms say any trip can be moved or cancelled when conditions are not safe. On Flores that usually means heavy rain upstream or a rough sea. Do not book canyoning on your last day. Flights off the island are often delayed by weather too, so put the canyon early in the stay and leave a spare day after it.

Ocidental's terms contradict each other on cancellation. One clause gives a full refund minus fees up to 48 hours before the start, and another says 72 hours. Read the current version before you pay and cancel at least 72 hours out to be safe. It takes Multibanco, Visa, Mastercard and MB Way.

Neither company states a minimum age on the pages we read. If you are booking for teenagers, ask before you pay.

Where canyoning fits in a Flores trip

The canyons sit in the same valleys as the island's best-known waterfalls and walks. Poço do Bacalhau is easy to reach on foot as well, and the waterfalls and crater lakes guide covers it from below. For the coastal path between Ponta Delgada and Fajã Grande, and which official trails are closed, see hiking on Flores. For the Galo and Catedral caves without a canyon first, the boat trips guide compares the operators.

Quick answers

Can a complete beginner go canyoning on Flores?

Yes. Ocidental's two-hour Batismo has a longest abseil of 9 metres, and WestCanyon's Level I tops out at 18 metres and starts with a practice session.

How much does canyoning on Flores cost in 2026?

Ocidental lists €55 for the two-hour introduction, €70 to €160 for its level 1 to 3 trips, €200 for Poço do Bacalhau and €220 for Barrosas, per person. WestCanyon quotes on request.

Do I need my own gear?

No. Both companies include the wetsuit, boots, helmet and harness. Bring swimwear, a towel and spare socks.

Can I abseil the Poço do Bacalhau waterfall?

Yes, as the last part of Ocidental's seven-hour Level 4 trip. WestCanyon's Level IV also includes a 115-metre waterfall, but its page does not name the canyon, so ask. Neither is a first trip.
