Flores in summer: swimming season, festivals and what to book ahead
June to September on Flores: highs of 22 to 26 °C, 15 hours of daylight in June and a sea that reaches 23 °C. When the two lifeguarded bathing places open, when the Festa do Emigrante and the Festival Ocidental fill the island, the July-August bus to Fajã Grande, and why you book beds, a car and the 12-seat Corvo boat early.
Summer is when Flores is easiest to visit. The days are long, the sea is warm enough for most people, the buses add a direct line to the west coast and the boat to Corvo sails six days a week. It is also when the island's few beds, cars and boat seats are most in demand, and the two big festivals bring emigrants home in July and August. This guide covers June to September: the weather, where you can swim, when the festivals are, and what to book before you fly.
What the weather is like
Flores is never dry, but summer is its driest stretch. The official 1991-2020 normals for Flores Airport, in Santa Cruz, give this picture:
- June: average high 22.1 °C, low 16.8 °C, about 95 mm of rain on roughly 10 days
- July: 24.9 °C and 19.2 °C, about 65 mm, the driest month, rain on about 8 days
- August: 26.0 °C and 20.3 °C, the warmest month, about 81 mm on about 10 days
- September: 24.6 °C and 19.3 °C, about 116 mm on about 12 or 13 days
Sunshine goes from about 65 hours in December to more than 200 in July and August. On 21 June 2026 the sun rose over Santa Cruz at 06:36 and set at 21:36 local time, a full 15 hours of daylight, which leaves room for a long walk and a swim on the same day.
Up on the central plateau, around the crater lakes, the official page for the PR03FLO trail warns of rain and fog, so bring a waterproof even in summer. The UV index is very high from June to August, so bring sun cream too, which you may not expect on an island this green.
Summer is also when the roadsides are lined with blue and pink hydrangeas, which gave the island its name: "flores" means flowers in Portuguese.
Swimming: where and when there is a lifeguard
The sea around Flores warms through the summer, from about 19 °C in June to about 22 °C in July and 23 °C in August and September. Flores has no long sandy beach. You swim in natural rock pools or off stone beaches, and only two places are monitored bathing waters with a lifeguard on duty in season:
- The Altio natural pools in Santa Cruz, on the Avenida dos Baleeiros, from mid-June to mid-September. This is the main place to swim on the island, with showers, toilets and parking, and no charge.
- The bathing area at Fajã Grande, on the west coast, in July and August only. Rock pools and a concrete platform under the 300-metre cliff, with showers, toilets and a café.
Outside those dates, and at the stone beaches such as Baía de Alagoa below Cedros or the beach by the harbour at Lajes, nobody watches the water. On the west coast the swell decides whether you can go in at all, even in August. The waterfall pools at Fajã Grande, such as Poço do Bacalhau, never have a lifeguard.
Festivals: when the island fills up
Flores has two big summer festivals, and both are as much homecomings for the island's emigrants as they are parties for residents and visitors.
- The Festa do Emigrante in Lajes das Flores. Its 39th edition ran from 17 to 20 July 2026, with Delfins and Calema at the top of the bill and fireworks back in the programme.
- The Festival Ocidental in Santa Cruz das Flores, called Cais das Poças until recently, started on 30 July 2026 and ran into the first days of August. Expect a parade of local traditions, fish broth, a fishing competition and a fair of local shops.
Santa Cruz also runs a series of summer evening concerts and events, the Noites de Verão. In 2025 it opened on 26 June with the Filarmónica da Fajãzinha and continued into September.
Dates move from year to year, so check the municipal pages of Lajes and Santa Cruz in spring. If your trip overlaps either festival, assume beds, hire cars and restaurant tables will be harder to get, and book them as soon as your flights are fixed.
What to book ahead
There is no ferry to Flores from the other islands in 2026, so you arrive by plane. Once you have your flights, book three things early.
The first is somewhere to stay. Beds are spread thinly across Santa Cruz, Lajes and the west-coast villages, and our guide to getting to Flores compares the three bases.
The second is a hire car. All the rental firms on the island are in Santa Cruz; see getting around Flores.
The third is the boat to Corvo. The small Atlânticoline boat from Santa Cruz to Corvo takes 12 passengers. In the summer 2026 weeks we checked, it sailed every day except Wednesday, at 09:30 and 18:00 from Santa Cruz, and the one-way fare for a visitor was €16.30. Even in late September 2026, after the summer timetable had ended, some sailings were fully booked. See the Corvo day trip guide.
The summer bus to the west coast
Public buses on Flores run Monday to Friday only, all year. In July and August a fifth line runs directly from Santa Cruz to Fajã Grande. In 2026 it left Santa Cruz at 08:00 and 18:00, took 35 minutes and cost €3.24. The return left Fajã Grande at 08:40 and 18:40. That makes a car-free day on the west coast possible: morning bus out, a walk and a swim at the bathing area, evening bus back. It does not help at weekends, when you will need a taxi or a car.
Walking in summer
Summer is the most comfortable season for the trails, with drier paths and long days. Closures still happen: on 1 October 2026 the official register listed the PR01FLO trail, from Ponta Delgada to Fajã Grande, as temporarily closed. Check trails.visitazores.com on the morning you walk. Our guide to hiking on Flores covers each route.
June, July, August or September?
- June has the longest days and no big festival, and the Santa Cruz pools have a lifeguard from mid-June, but the sea is still about 19 °C and the Fajã Grande bathing area has not opened yet.
- July is the driest month and has the summer bus. It also has the Festa do Emigrante, so book early if you go then.
- August is the warmest and sunniest month, with the Festival Ocidental at the start.
- September keeps the sea at about 23 °C, as warm as August, but brings more rain, and the Corvo boat drops to three days a week from the start of the month. The lifeguards at Santa Cruz stay until mid-September.
If you can choose, late June or early September give you most of summer away from the festival weeks. For the rest of the year, see Flores in winter.
Quick answers
When is the best time to swim on Flores?
July to September. The sea reaches about 22 to 23 °C, and lifeguards are on duty at the Santa Cruz pools from mid-June to mid-September and at Fajã Grande in July and August.
When are the big festivals on Flores?
In 2026 the Festa do Emigrante in Lajes ran from 17 to 20 July, and the Festival Ocidental in Santa Cruz started on 30 July. Check the dates for your year with the two municipalities.
Do I need to book the boat to Corvo in advance?
Yes. The boat carries 12 passengers, and in 2026 it ran six days a week in summer. Book once your Flores dates are fixed, and keep a spare day in case the sea is too rough.
Can I get around Flores without a car in summer?
Partly. In July and August the summer bus runs from Santa Cruz to Fajã Grande on weekdays, but there is no bus at weekends. For anything else, hire a car or book a taxi.
