Azores Houses Council opens assembly in Uruguay
Twenty-three Casas dos Açores from six countries are taking part in the three-day gathering in San Carlos.
The 28th General Assembly of the World Council of Casas dos Açores begins on 9 October in San Carlos, Uruguay, and runs until 11 October. It is being held under the presidency of Casa dos Açores do Uruguai, Los Azoreños.
The opening session will be attended by Luís Garcia, president of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores; Paulo Estêvão, regional secretary for Parliamentary Affairs and Communities; and Conceição Pilar, Portugal's ambassador to Uruguay. The programme starts with a panel on the centuries-old links between the Azores and Uruguay, with representatives of the Azorean diaspora and Portuguese communities.
The meeting brings together 23 Casas dos Açores from Portugal, Brazil, the United States, Canada, Uruguay and Bermuda. The afternoon internal session is expected to introduce new observer-status Casas dos Açores, admit Casa dos Açores da Região Centro as a full member, and decide on the World Council presidency for 2026/2027 and the 29th General Assembly in 2027.
On 10 October, the Casas dos Açores are scheduled to be presented to Garcia, Estêvão and regional deputies from the five parties represented in the Legislative Assembly. The day is due to end with an Azorean-Carolinian dance performance organised by Casa dos Açores do Uruguai.
The closing session on Sunday morning will include the reading of conclusions, participation certificates and the handover of the World Council presidency. Merit medals are to be awarded to Brenda Martinez de Corbo, Marisa Fígoli Pereira, Washington Pereira and Modesta Esquef, while Folclore Açoriano will receive the Produto Açoriano de Qualidade distinction.
