Azores Marine Park marks 15 years with new visual identity

The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for the Sea and Fisheries, marked the 15th anniversary of the approval of the diploma that structured the Azores Marine Park. It also presented a new visual identity.
On 28 September 2011, the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores approved the diploma. It brought together oceanic protected marine areas for the protection and management of the Region's natural marine heritage.
Since 2019, the Regional Government has led the revision of the Azores Network of Marine Protected Areas under the Blue Azores programme. New legislation that entered into force in January 2026 brought approximately 287 thousand square kilometres of oceanic protected marine areas into the Park. The protected marine areas now cover 30% of the sea of the Azores.
Regional Secretary for the Sea and Fisheries Mário Rui Pinho said the Park plays a fundamental role in conserving the Region's natural heritage. The new identity is intended to make the Park more recognisable and closer to the public. It is inspired by the natural richness of the sea of the Azores.
Its logo combines a sperm whale's tail, a manta ray, sea waves and a seabird. The elements represent ocean life from the depths to the surface and form a fingerprint. The image evokes Azoreans' connection to the sea and shared responsibility for its protection.
