Ribeira Grande upgrades sports facilities as support applications open

The Municipality of Ribeira Grande is carrying out work at several sports facilities in the municipality to prepare them for the new sports season. The interventions are intended to improve conditions for athletes, clubs and associations, including use, safety, functionality and comfort.
Applications for municipal financial support for sport will be open from 1 October to 30 November under the municipality's sports support regulation. Sports clubs and associations in the municipality must use the form on the municipality's official website, with analysis and decisions due during December.
The municipality says it provides 250 thousand euros a year in direct support for athlete training, plus 60 thousand euros for athlete federation registration costs, totalling 310 thousand euros.
Mayor Jaime Vieira said work on sports facilities and financial support for clubs are complementary parts of the municipal sports strategy. He said investment in sports spaces supports training and competition, while funding enables clubs to invest in training and offer young people opportunities to take part and progress in sport.
The municipality says the support for athlete training is important because clubs and associations encourage sport among children and young people, healthy habits, discipline, commitment, teamwork and self-improvement. Ribeira Grande has been distinguished as a "Município Amigo do Desporto", according to Correio dos Açores.
