Bolieiro calls for no further delays to new São Miguel prison
José Manuel Bolieiro said the Government of the Azores is available to work with the Republic and local authorities on prison facilities and the new São Miguel prison.
At the opening session on Thursday, 8 October, José Manuel Bolieiro said there should be no more delays to the future prison for São Miguel/Ponta Delgada. Speaking at the conference "Direitos Humanos nos estabelecimentos prisionais: estado atual em Portugal: reflexões e perspetivas" at Teatro Micaelense in Ponta Delgada, he said: "A decisão está tomada. É realizar e assumir os compromissos".
Bolieiro said reflection on human rights in prisons must lead to concrete action. He said institutions share responsibility for transforming and dignifying the prison system. He said the Government of the Azores is available to work with the Republic and local authorities to improve current facilities and build the new infrastructure.
Bolieiro highlighted prisoner training and qualifications as tools for social reintegration. The conference, organised by the Associação Sindical dos Juízes Portugueses, takes place on 8 and 9 October and forms part of the centenary commemorations of the Ordem dos Advogados.
Separately, Secretary of State for Justice Gonçalo Cunha Pires said the new São Miguel prison is in a new phase and has a defined timetable. According to Source 1, Justice Minister Rita Alarcão Júdice said this week that construction is planned for next year.
